Extra funding for the popular SuperGold card free off-peak public transport scheme was welcomed by the Green Party today, who nevertheless remain concerned about the reduced fare subsidy for the scheme, and the requirement that Regional Councils pick up administration costs.

Minister of Transport Steven Joyce announced today that the Government will put an extra $9 million into the scheme over the next two years to ensure it can keep up with growing demand.

“The Green Party submitted strongly in favour of retaining the scheme, and we are pleased the Government has changed its mind,” said Green Party Wellington Transport Spokesperson Sue Kedgley.

“The SuperGold card has been a phenomenal success, and at less than 1% of the national transport budget, it is clearly very cost effective.

“It has done more to improve the quality of living for older New Zealanders than most recent initiatives, and is a great example of the smart green solutions we need.

“It enables the elderly to be mobile and engaged in the community, makes better use of existing off-peak buses, trains and ferries, and reduces congestion, crash risk and pollution by reducing car trips,” said Ms Kedgley.

“We remain concerned about the Government’s move to reduce the fare subsidy by 10%, and require Regional Councils to absorb the administration costs.

“Why should regional ratepayers have to pick up the tab for national transport, health and safety benefits?

“We hope the Government will see the light, and continue funding this scheme well into the future,” said Ms Kedgley.
