Round two of Scarbro Caro Bowl tennis saw Kiwi Davis Cup player Rubin Statham return to tennis in New Zealand to add even more strength to his Parnell club side. Ranked at just outside of the world’s top 300 Statham who had reached the Commonwealth Games quarterfinals beat American Paul Koenke 6-4 6-2 as his Parnell side defeated Remuera 6-0. Parnell are now equal first on the points table with Campbell Park on the maximum 16 points and have a significant break on the rest of the teams.

The nearest rival is Cockle Bay who have had a win and a loss and sit on eight points.

Campbell Park had an easy 6-0 victory over Blockhouse Bay, who on paper looked like a contender prior to the season starting but have not been able to use the injured Marcus Daniell or any other of their international players.

The Park side featuring it’s former Argentine internationals Gustavo Gomez and Mariano Pettigrosso as well as former Kiwi internationals Adam Thompson and Robbie Cheyne only dropped on set in their win.

Other men’s winners were Royal Oak 4-2 over Pompallier after winning both doubles and the lower order singles. Pompallier took the top two singles thanks to Teo Susnjak and Gustavo Perziano. Cockle Bay were 6-0 over Herne Bay in the battle of the new sides to the competition, Andrew Batie having to work hard in the top singles to overcome Kyle August 6-4 6-4.

In the women’s section the young talent of Leela Beattie and Emily Fanning continued their form for Royal Oak who accounted for Mission Bay 6-0 without dropping a set. The win puts Royal Oak at the top of the points table on the maximum 16, however they will be aware that main rivals, Parnell have only played one match in the competition so far.

Meanwhile Kohimarama defeated a young Glendowie team 5-1 with Kairangi Vano struggling in singles to come back from injury. Vano was beaten in straight sets by Sarah McDermott, however she won her doubles match with Luci Barlow. Pompallier beat Remuera 6-0, again the experience of Shelley Bryce proving invaluable against a Remuera side which was missing a couple of its key players.

There’s no Caro Bowl over Labour weekend with the competition returning the following Friday 29 October.
