News that the Government has adopted a Green Party proposal to appoint a full-time Disability Commissioner was welcomed by Green MP Catherine Delahunty today.

“I am delighted that the Government has decided to appoint a full-time Disability Commissioner within the Human Rights Commission,” said Ms Delahunty, the Green Party Disability Spokesperson.

“One in five people in New Zealand experience disability. There’s strong support from the disability community for the appointment of a Commissioner, and a real feeling that structural change is needed to meet our obligations under the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.”

A members’ bill in Ms Delahunty’s name establishing the full-time position of Disability Commissioner was drawn from the Parliamentary ballot in August. It is due to be debated in Parliament today.

“The Government has pre-empted the need for my bill by adopting its proposals this morning. It’s a great example of how the Green Party can help to set the agenda for political debate and change.

“I look forward to supporting the new commissioner in his or her advocacy for real change and work to ensure the human rights of one in five New Zealanders are guaranteed.”
