The events of the past few days carry lessons we need to learn from before next year’s Rugby World Cup, says David Lowe, Employment Manager for the Employers & Manufacturers Association.

Mr Lowe will address a business event this morning on preparing for the RWC*with a warning that if the union action on the Hobbit is replicated next year we could see New Zealand’s tourism and hospitality reputation wrecked.

“It would be reassuring if the Council of Trade Unions would confirm now that it will not Hobbit the Rugby World Cup,” Mr Lowe said.

“Cool heads are needed to ensure we will work together next year to put the interests of New Zealand Inc. first.

“Some unions have already indicated they are lining up the RWC for industrial action.

“Many unions are reputable organisations with an important role to play, but the RWC represents a bigger picture than either businesses or employees on their own.

“People of all types of skill will be required in droves for activities around the Cup with benefits all round, and this is no time to be pursuing agendas.

“The RWC has the scope to bring us together, while delivering valuable extra jobs, and some respite from today’s trying times.”
