New Zealand residents departed on 210,000 overseas trips in September 2010, up 9 percent from
September 2009, Statistics New Zealand said today. New Zealand residents took more trips to Australia,
China, the United States, Samoa, and the United Kingdom, but fewer to Fiji.

"Resident departures reached a new high for a September month, surpassing the previous high of
208,500, which was recorded in September 2007 before the global economic downturn," acting
Population Statistics manager Kimberly Cullen said.

Visitor arrivals numbered 174,200 in September 2010, up 1 percent from September 2009, the highest
number of visitors ever recorded for a September month. The main increases were from Korea (up
1,200), China, and Australia (each up 1,100).

Visitors from the United Kingdom (8,600) continued to decrease in September 2010, down 2,000
from September 2009. This is the lowest number of visitor arrivals from the United Kingdom for a
September month since 2000 (8,100).

Net migration gain up in September

Seasonally adjusted, net permanent and long-term migration (arrivals minus departures) was 1,100 in
September 2010, above the 900 recorded for both July and August 2010. Before this increase, this series
had decreased from 1,800 in January 2010 to 200 in June 2010. The rebound was due to a recovery in
arrivals, with the seasonally adjusted departures series remaining constant since May 2010.

Net migration in the September 2010 year was 13,900, with net gains from the United Kingdom (6,300),
India (5,900), and China (3,500). The net gain from the United Kingdom was down from 9,200 in
the September 2009 year. There was a net outflow of 18,100 migrants to Australia in the September 2010
year, well down from 23,100 in the September 2009 year and 33,900 in the September 2008 year.
