98 activities and counting!
The number of free and discounted activities being offered to workplaces has reached 98, with more to
be confirmed.
Many local sport and recreation providers are offering their services to workers in the Sport Manawatu
region to help get them active and having fun.
Sport Manawatu’s Kathy McMillan is astounded with the response these providers have shown, “Workers
will be spoilt for choice, they’d have to be doing at least two different activities per day to try them all,
which isn’t a bad thing!”
Any workplace can sign up for the BNZ Workplace Challenge, and once they do, are granted free or
discounted access to some of the region’s top facilities and classes.
Rowena Weth and Yvette Gregory, Palmerston North Zumba instructors, will be taking a free ‘intro’ class
in the square, with a discounted class each Thursday after that.
Rowena says, “We’re really excited to see how it turns out. Zumba is popular already so no doubt the
participants will have a ball learning some new moves and grooves,”
The BNZ Workplace Challenge begins on November 1 and runs for six weeks. Teams of five can sign up
to record minutes of physical activity to compete for the ‘Most Active Workplace’ award.
Some of the activities on offer include Muay Thai kickboxing, squash, Les Mills classes, Ultimate Frisbee,
backyard cricket, ju jitsu, bootcamp classes, tennis and Pilates.
All teams will have access to the activities calendar on the Sport Manawatu website, which will indicate
whether each activity is free, discounted, ongoing, or if it requires pre-registration.
“Even if participants were only taking part in one activity a day, they’d be paying on average $50 a week
if they were full price,” says Kathy.
A series of launch parties will occur in different regions this week, where teams will receive information
packs with the chance to meet operators from the different sport and recreation providers, and discuss
with Sport Manawatu and BNZ staff any questions they may have.
