Cars Belong On Streets - Not Footpaths
The Dunedin City Council is about to start a new parking enforcement campaign after complaints about cars parking on footpaths in the Octagon.
Parking officers have been called about cars on the footpaths and the central paved open space of the Octagon, opposite Lower Stuart Street.
The behaviour has been noticed especially late at night and on weekends, and the DCC will now begin to target this illegal behaviour.
DCC Transportation Operations Manager Graeme Hamilton says footpaths generally, but particularly paved footpaths in the inner city, are not engineered to cope with the weight of cars. Cars parking on the pavers have, and are, causing them to break, at a cost to ratepayers.
Cars parked on footpaths and the broken pavers also create a pedestrian hazard, particularly for the visually-impaired, and the parked cars are an unexpected danger to motor traffic.
A similar recent campaign to prevent illegal parking on bus stops was considered a success, and the DCC is hoping this new campaign will have a similar effect, Development Services Manager Kevin Thompson says.
