Fireworks Display

It's not Guy Fawkes without some gunpowder and sparks to light up the sky, and this Friday night (5 November) in Wellington promises to be no different.

Now in its 16th year, the annual Pelorus Trust Sky Show kicks off at 9.00pm, designed by expert pyrotechnician Robert McDermott.

Council Manager, Community Events Rebecca Hardie says the show will be a bit different from other years.

"We've taken the time down from 15 to 12 minutes, but we're not skimping on fireworks. We're just condensing the display - it'll be much busier.

"We've also teamed up with the drumming and percussion group Strike, whose soundtrack will play along to the display. The blend of beats and blasts will be a thrill for all to see and hear."

The music will be played on Classic Hits 90.1 and ZM 90.9 radio stations. There will also be speakers dotted around the waterfront. As ever, there will be lots of road closures and restrictions for motorists around the waterfront, Oriental Bay, Roseneath and the central business district. We encourage people to arrive early, walk if possible or take public transport as traffic is often gridlocked.

Road Closures

The following traffic controls will be in place for the Pelorus Trust Sky Show on Guy Fawkes Night, Friday 5 November:

• Traffic moving east away from the central city on Oriental Parade and Evans Bay Parade will be restricted to one lane and one direction from 7.00pm - 10.00pm so emergency vehicles can access the area quickly if needed.
• Evans Bay Parade will be closed to through traffic (access to residents only) at the Cobham Drive intersection from 7.00 - 10.00pm and we will have large numbers of parking wardens on patrol. Any illegally or dangerously parked vehicles will be towed away.
• On Mt Victoria, Alexandra Road will be closed at the intersection with Constable Street in Newtown once the maximum safe parking capacity towards the Mt Victoria summit has been reached. There will also be parking restrictions around the lookout, along Alexandra Road and a one-way traffic flow will be in place on the roads around the lookout.

Remember - it is an offence to stop anywhere on the highway between Petone and Wellington. So if you're looking for a good vantage spot - head up into the hills.
