A new toilet opening in King Street tomorrow means shoppers don’t have to walk across town to find a public convenience.

The new public toilet is a single uni-sex toilet located in the Council-owned public carpark, adjacent to Sutto Café, which can be relocated in future should a better site become available.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says for years both shoppers and retailers have called for a public toilet in the West-end CBD but finding an appropriate site proved difficult.

“This interim solution means shoppers don’t have to hold on until they can get to the newly refurbished Russell Street public toilet further up Heretaunga Street,” Mayor Yule says.

“The facility is designed so it can be easily relocated, so it can be picked up and re-sited at little cost when and if better opportunities present themselves,” Mr Fraser says.

“The toilet looks great. It sports top quality tile walls and stainless steel fittings that are strong and easy to maintain,” he says.

Hastings resident Jean Pentelow, the “champion of Hastings public conveniences” will be the first to “test” the new loo tomorrow at 11.00am.

“I’m very happy that Hastings District Council has built this toilet. There are plenty of older shoppers who will be thrilled they don’t have to nip into a café, go across town or cut their shopping time short because they need to go to the toilet,” Mrs Pentelow says.
