Southland District Council Approves Major Pavement Rehabilitation Contract

Southland District Council approved a major rehabilitation contract on the Waiarikiki Mimihau Road at its meeting in Invercargill yesterday (subs September 12).

The work involves all roadside drainage, extension or replacement of culverts, removal and replacement of unsuitable materials, the construction of retaining walls, supply and placement rockfill, bulkfill gravel subbase and basecourse materials and sealing and marking the surface.

Council Asset Manager Roading Russell Hawkes said that four tenders were received for the work when tenders closed at the end of August.

The contract was awarded to Central Western Roading at a total price of $671,256.94 excluding GST.

He said although the cost of the work was above that estimated this was a reflection of the higher cost of materials in this area and increased standards being applied this year.

Russell Hawkes said work is due to start on this contract in early October
