SUPPORT for both amalgamation and boundary change is contained within the 50 community feedback forms so far received by the Manawatu District and Palmerston North City Councils on the ABC Project.

The councils are seeking public feedback regarding the project’s amalgamation-boundary change options and respondents have until Friday, November 26, to respond to the joint call.

MDC Community and Strategic Development Officer, Tracey Hunt, said supporters of amalgamation felt it would be beneficial for one council to address challenges on growth and development services and any possible issues around representation.

“They believe better outcomes for the entire region could be achieved under one council,” she said.

Ms Hunt said those that supported boundary change worried about the differences between an urban city and a rural district and did not think they would be well represented under amalgamation.

“Some agree that the status quo cannot continue and a boundary change is necessary.”

One further ABC Project public meeting remains – at the MDC in Manchester Street, Feilding, at 5.30pm on Monday (November 22).

Ms Hunt said there had been good attendances at four previous meetings in Newbury, Longburn, Palmerston North and Bunnythorpe.

Once the community feedback period had finished all comments would be summarised for a joint council workshop on Friday, December 17. A joint committee meeting in the New Year would decide the best way forward.
