Waikato District Council has joined Councils across New Zealand placing condolence books on office counters and organising a staff collection for the families that have lost their loved ones in the Pike River Mine tragedy.

District Mayor Allan Sanson shares the community’s shock and disbelief at the extent of the tragedy.

“Mining is a key part of our community and our thoughts are with the people of Greymouth,” he said.

“There is a shared sense of community and solidarity among miners across the country and Huntly is no exception. Many of us have connections to the mine or mining families and while we can’t imagine the impact that a tragedy like this would have, we send our heartfelt condolences as one mining community to another.”

Residents are welcome to visit Waikato District Council offices in Ngaruawahia, Huntly Tuakau and Raglan and the Te Kauwhata Library to add their condolences to the books which will be sent to the Greymouth District Council in January.
