Welsh Rugby Union Representative Alan Phillips visited Taupō for a couple of days this week to check out the venues and facilities in the lead up to the Rugby World Cup 2011, kicking off in September next year.

Mr Phillips, Manager of the Welsh Rugby Team and his wife Cerry visited Hamilton, Taupō, New Plymouth and Wellington in their brief two week stay to view where the Welsh team would be staying and training during the RWC 2011 next year.

The Welsh team will be staying in Taupō for four nights and five days in September during the early stages of the competition.  The South African and Irish teams will also be staying in Taupō for a few days during the Rugby World Cup next year.

New Zealanders are so welcoming said Mr Phillips.  “The people here are just waiting to welcome visitors to New Zealand – hosting the RWC 2011 is a great opportunity for this country.”

Mr Phillips knows New Zealand well with this being his eighth visit here.  He said Taupō was an ideal stop for the Welsh team.  “Taupō is just beautiful.  There is so much to do here for our players and everything is so close.  It is really important that we get some relaxation in as well as work hard on the field.”

Mr Phillips said the team wanted to rally up as much support as possible and were especially keen to hear from any Welsh supporters based in Taupō.  “We really need to get our Welsh supporters behind us,” he said.
