NZCT Finals day 3 results

NZCT SECONDARY SCHOOL GIRLS’ FINALS – DAY 3

The two grand finalists were decided on the third day of the 2010 New Zealand Community Trust Secondary School Girls’ Cricket Finals today at Owen Delany Park and Kaimanawa Reserve. Christchurch Girls High School will face off against Hillcrest High School for the trophy.


Hillcrest High School versus Epsom Girls’ Grammar School

Epsom Girls’ Grammar School 123/4 – Maddie Green 49, Leanne Gray 32 LOST to Hillcrest High School 125/5 – Heidi Arndt 39*, Haley Brown 28, Felicity Leydon-Davis 27, Ellen Tocher 2-25 by five wickets.

Epsom Girls’ Grammar School won the toss and elected to bat first.

Epsom were positive in their approach with first day centurion, Maddy Green leading the way. When Green lost her opening partner Nicola Jones early for six Leanne Gray came to the crease and the two Epsom girls combined well for a second wicket partnership of 70.

Green in particular played some elegant shots all over Kaimanawa Reserve but when she was dismissed in the 23rd over one short of her half century Epsom’s innings began to stutter.

Leanne Gray played well for her 32, but the run-rate began to decrease and they batted out their 40 overs to be 123/4.

The Hillcrest bowlers bowled tidy spells but were unable to break through Epsom consistently. Paige Whiting took the wicket of Maddy Green and finished with tidy figures of 1/15 off seven overs.

In reply Sydney Crocker was dismissed early but a stand of 40 for the second wicket between Steph Goile and Haley Brown advanced Hillcrest’s score quickly.

Both players were dismissed within quick succession but a 60 run stand between Heidi Arndt and Felicity Leydon-Davis took Hillcrest to a five wicket victory and into tomorrow’s final.



St Hilda’s Collegiate School versus Wanganui Collegiate

Wanganui Collegiate 118 all out – Hester Nesbitt 26, Danielle Janes 22, Olivia Waldron 3-14 LOST to St Hilda’s Collegiate 121/1 – Polly Inglis 47*, Caitlin Blakely 29 by nine wickets.

Wanganui Collegiate won the toss and elected to bat first.

St Hilda’s came out buoyed after their performance yesterday to produce a tight bowling display. Mandy MacDonald and Jodie Gibson opened the bowling attack and contained Wanganui Collegiate early on.

Hester Nesbitt set out to contribute a captain’s knock and was looking good until Caitlin Blakely had her struck leg before wicket. Danielle Janes was the only other batsman to push on with a valuable 22.

A tidy bowling spell of 3-14 off five for Olivia Waldron, backed up in the field by St Hilda’s taking all their catches, saw Wanganui Collegiate dismissed for 118 in the 36th over.

St Hilda’s approached their reply calmly and were able to pick up singles and twos regularly. The score had reached 72 before the loss of the first wicket when Caitlin Blakely was bowled by Charlotte Haggas for 29.

Polly Inglis continued to work the ball around the park and her terrific 47 not out saw her school pick up their first victory of the week by nine wickets.





Christchurch Girls’ High School versus Wellington Girls’ College

Wellington Girls’ College 111/9 - Hannah Austin-Smellie 28, Neelum Patel 26, Mereana Hyde 4-5 LOST to Christchurch Girls’ High School 112/4 – Laura Hughes 63*, Meg Lay 27, Neelum Patel 2/18 by six wickets.

Christchurch Girls’ High School won the toss and put Wellington Girls’ College in to bat.

A solid partnership of 40 between Stephanie Bremner and Hannah Austin-Smellie saw Wellington moving steadily at 67 for 2 but the dismissal of Bremner gave Christchurch Girls’ momentum and they continued to pick up frequent wickets. This was largely due to a great bowling spell by pace bowler Mereana Hyde who picked up 4-25 off her 6 overs.

Good contributions from Austin-Smellie and Neelum Patel saw Wellington Girls’ College through to 111/9 off their 40 overs.

Christchurch Girls’ High School’s reply included a terrific 58 run stand for the third wicket between Laura Hughes and Meg Lay.

The two Christchurch players constructed their innings well, rotating the strike and ticking the score along at a consistent rate.

Lay was eventually dismissed for 27 but Hughes continued the momentum, making an unbeaten 63 and helping her school reach the 2010 final against Hillcrest High School.



Havelock North High School versus Avondale College

Havelock North High School 129 all out – Elise Yule 31, Holly MacDonald 26, Julia Vito 3-18, Shannen Elliott 2-18 BEAT Avondale College 86 all out – Shannen Elliott 31, Bhamini Rangnekar 3-20, Ella Richardson 2-6 by 43 runs.

Avondale College won the toss and decided to make the most of the overcast conditions by bowling first.

Although Havelock North High School lost an early wicket they got on track when Elise Yule and Holly MacDonald came together and batted very positively rotating the strike. The 68 run partnership was broken when Holly MacDonald tried to come back for another run and was caught short of her ground.

Avondale College then put the pressure on and picked up regular wickets to restrict Havelock North High School to 129.

Avondale College struggled to get going in their reply thanks to some fantastic line and length bowling from openers Bhamini Rangnekar and Kate Hensman.

Shannen Elliott continued her fine form for Avondale, anchoring the innings with 31. However, she struggled for support throughout the innings and Rangnekar was the chief destroyer for Havelock with 3-20 helping her team to a 43 run victory.
