Today is the first day of New Zealand Cricket’s Women’s National Development tournament being played at Lincoln University.

Six teams from around the country, representing each major association, will participate in three 50 over games and five Twenty20 matches.

New Zealand Cricket’s team and tournament operations manager Catherine Campbell said the development tournament has produced a number of top class female cricketers and she expects this year’s tournament to be the same. “We’ve had a number of White Ferns through the tournament. The players involved are aspiring to step up to domestic level then onto international,” she said. “The tournament offers the players an opportunity to play at one of New Zealand Cricket’s premier facilities.”

A number of the players participated in the New Zealand Community Trust (NZCT) tournament for secondary school girls last week in Taupo. “The development tournament offers a stepping stone for these players. It also exposes them to different forms of the game which is a positive thing for player development,” Campbell said.

The tournament runs until December 21 and for the first time in tournament history all matches will be live scored on www.blackcaps.co.nz
