A glance at the monthly tonnage of recyclables being disgorged by the big red bins dotted around Tararua is ample evidence that the district is eagerly grasping the opportunity to keep rubbish out of the landfills.

Where 24 tonnes was taken in July, August’s total of 42 tonnes has nearly doubled, waste manager Jeremy Hirst reports.

Kerbside recycling is also a success story but it comes with some reminders regarding cardboard, tins and plastic bags.

Mr Hirst asks that cardboard be tied in bundles – not left loose – and that aluminium and tin cans are washed before being recycled as required by the waste management contractor.

A third ‘please’ is not to overload rubbish bags.

Those who leave large bulging, black garden bags out are making life very difficult for the collector because they are far too heavy, Mr Hirst says.

Users are reminded that the weight maximum for plastic bags – supermarket bags for example – is 20kgs.

“So please keep up the momentum but be aware of the contractor’s requirements.” He says.

Collection days for weekly recycling are Tuesdays in Dannevirke and Wednesdays in Woodville, Pahiatua and Eketahuna.
