Samsung Electronics New Zealand has unveiled the Samsung Galaxy 550 (model: GT-i5503) smartphone based on the Android™ 2.1 platform.

The Galaxy 5 brings style and character to your palm.  It combines cool styling and the ability to connect with your social communities while on the go. 

Stefan Lecchi, head of the mobile communications business in New Zealand says “with the Galaxy 550, you’ll never be out of touch with style and your social network. The asymmetric design adds modernity to the classic mobile form while the connected features bring your social life to your mobile in one.”

The Galaxy 550 features Samsung’s Social Hub, an integrated contacts list that links contacts from across social networks, enabling users to connect with friends across platforms and communicate seamlessly across networks.

Contact lists from sites including Facebook™, MySpace™ and Twitter™ are accessible on one platform ensuring users can remain connected at all times. Beside each name are shortcut links that connect to social networking services, email and SMS/MMS.  Social Hub also enables fans of social networking to view photos on their mobiles using the integrated media browser and seamlessly upload, manage and share photos from Twitter and Facebook and create a digital photo album while on the go.

In addition, the Samsung Galaxy 550 includes a range of intelligent features and applications such as SWYPEÔ. Rather than typing letters individually, users simply swipe their finger across the keyboard from letter to letter, making texting on a touch screen phone quicker and easier than conventional mobile phones. Samsung and SWYPEÔ recently broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest way to text.

The Galaxy 550 also provides rich, augmented reality content through the Layar Reality Browser that shows the real view of a location and displays information with only one click. By holding up the Galaxy to a POI (Point of Interest) such as a landmark, users can easily find the information they need, such as movie times or the history of a landmark, with the help of Google Maps™.

The Samsung Galaxy 550 is available on the Vodafone New Zealand network.
