Wellington City Council has withdrawn its resource consent to install a further 125 bus shelters in residential parts of Wellington City.

Chief Executive Garry Poole says he made the decision to withdraw the consent, following concerns raised by residents about the nature and location of the shelters still to go in.

"Council officers have been holding informal mediation talks with representatives from BUS (Build Useful Shelters) for some months and we have also reviewed our contract arrangements and the resource consent process in conjunction with those talks.

"As a result Council officers will re-visit the proposed shelter locations, the appropriateness of advertising, and make sure the design of shelters is sympathetic to residential character, as well as providing adequate weather protection. The feedback we have received from residents in our discussions will help us in this work."

Mayor Prendergast welcomed Mr Poole's decision, saying the contract for the bus shelters had been in place since 1999.

"I think it's important that we have another look at things and take into account the issues and concerns residents have raised."
