The Yahoo!Xtra Northern Knights’ selectors have named a fresh-look squad to resume the quest to defend the Plunket Shield in Whangarei next week.

The Knights will temporarily do without the services of their captain James Marshall, who is attending his twin brother Hamish’s wedding. Stand-in skipper Brad Wilson will take over the reins for the match against the top-of-the-table Central Stags. Both Marshalls will be available for the rest of the competition after that, with England-based Hamish playing for the Knights as an overseas player.

Brook Hatwell, who made his Knights one-day debut in the one-day competition as cover for Daniel Flynn and scored a half century on debut against Wellington, comes into the Plunket Shield squad for the first time. He is joined by fellow Hamilton player and young pace bowler Andrew Mathieson, with offspin bowler Jono Boult joining his fast bowler brother Trent in the squad.

Northern stalwart Joey Yovich has been left out of the squad after struggling to get a bowl through the Twenty20 and one-day competitions this season. Bradley Scott is also missing from the squad, while contracted player Anurag Verma has been ruled out of the rest of the season with an abdominal injury.
