MANAWATU District Council will act as a collection point for members of the public wanting to make cash donations to help those affected by the Christchurch earthquake.

District Mayor, Ian McKelvie, and MDC Chief Executive, Lorraine Vincent, said the appeal, which opened today, would run for as long as required.

The public can make their donations at the council’s administration building in Manchester Street, Feilding.

Mr McKelvie said the opportunity for those in the district to donate locally was possibly better than becoming involved in national appeals, as many people felt “more comfortable” doing it that way.

“I think it is important that the local community has an immediate opportunity to help,” he said.
Ms Vincent said for those not in Christchurch there was a sense of “helplessness” and the council initiative was a way that allowed people to contribute.

“It’s also important to realise that while we may want to jump on a plane and assist, the key is Christchurch will call us when they are ready and our response be appropriate to their needs and requests.

“Christchurch is in rescue mode at the moment and it will take a number of days and weeks before they know what resourcing is required,” she said.

In the meantime, proceeds from the Kairanga Community Centre’s village paddock party on Saturday will now go towards Christchurch’s quake relief.

The fund raiser had been originally aimed at raising money for the Kairanga Hall. It will be held at the Kairanga School from 4.30pm to 8pm.
