As a result of yesterday's devastating earthquake in Christchurch, Statistics New Zealand has suspended the delivery of census forms for the entire country until midday, Friday 25 February.

"Like everyone in New Zealand, our many staff in Christchurch and around the country are struggling to cope with yesterday's tragedy.

"We also face uncertainty as to the extent of damage to our buildings and operating systems in Christchurch and what impact that will have on the 2011 Census.

"We will be making assessments of damage and decisions for how we will proceed with the 2011 Census in the coming days.

"We are still concerned about the safety of our staff and their families," says 2011 Census General Manager, Dr Carol Slappendel.
