Christchurch City Council Update.

  • As the recovery effort continues, residents are asked to continue to stay at home if at all possible
  • Today, teams of building and health inspectors began assessing residential properties effected by the quake. Forty teams are visiting the suburbs of Brighton, Dallington, Avonside, Parklands/Queenspark, Saint Martins/Opawa, and Lyttelton
  • In the East Side of the city, motorists are asked to avoid the area as this is hindering repair work. If people must travel, please use a bike or alternative routes.
  • Twenty new water tanker stations have been established at schools around the City today
  • Welfare Centres – Overnight some 600 people took shelter. Residents in need of welfare centres are reminded to bring personal medicine, sanitary products, water bottles. Note: There is traffic congestion around the Burnside High School welfare centre. Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible
  • Shop owners and employees are not to visit/enter place of work if it has not been properly inspected
  • Unless water is bottled. People need to boil water
  • If water is available and there are no sewage flows, residents can use sanitary fixtures sparingly E.G flushing toilets and showers. If water is not available, residents can dig latrines or use buckets. Port-a-loos are being sourced but may take some time
  • Priority remains on restoration of water supply. The next focus is waste water
  • Rescue teams continue working systematically in the CBD
