Navy survey vessel heading to Gisborne and Napier
After nearly a six month break from shipping lane surveying for Land Information New Zealand, including a three month maintenance period and a trip up to the Pacific Islands, the Navy Hydrographic and Survey Vessel, HMNZS RESOLUTION is returning to Hawke's Bay to commence another eight weeks hydrographic surveying.
During the first 10 day surveying period they experienced great weather conditions and completed over 600 of the 3825 nautical line miles required to be surveyed in the current financial year. During the four survey periods the aim is to complete the majority of these line miles and also conduct other survey activities such as seabed samples and buoy fixing.
RESOLUTION will make three port visits prior to returning to Auckland in early November. The first two port visits are to RESOLUTION’S homeport of Gisborne between 20 – 24 September and 4 – 8 October. The second visit to Gisborne will coincide with the Te Ūnga Mai Festival commemorating the first landing of Captain Cook and celebrating the National and International significance of the Gisborne area.
RESOLUTION’s final visit for the year is to Napier between 18 – 22 October, prior to entering a short maintenance period in Auckland. The port visits are always eagerly anticipated and a great opportunity to experience the sights and sounds of the East Coast.
Commander Murray Tuffin, and his ship’s company of 49 men and women, will represent the Navy over the three port visits and look forward to engaging with the local community. The visits provide a welcome break for the ship’s company, following a very busy operational period.
The ship will not be open to the public on these visits.
