Individual donations from farmers and staff along with Fonterra contributions have reached $3,000,000.

Fonterra Shareholders’ Council Chair Simon Couper said, “This is a huge effort by farmers, some of whom have been struggling with business pressures and recovering from recent droughts.

For me, it typifies what I have seen in my career as a farmer where rural communities come together to support one another. It’s great to see this support expressed for the people of Canterbury.”

“It’s been fantastic the way Fonterra has reacted to Christchurch’s crisis with many 100,000 of litres of water and milk products. As a shareholder representative I have received nothing but positive comment from shareholders,” he said.

At first hearing the news of the devastating earthquake, Fonterra donated $1,000,000 to the Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund. Farmers and Fonterra staff successfully raised $1,000,000 and Fonterra is matching this dollar for dollar.

Fonterra has today announced it will continue to match further farmer and staff donations dollar for dollar.
