Speight’s Summit is on the hunt for seven outstanding dodgeballers to make up the 2011 ‘Speight’s Black Kea’s’. This representative team will compete in the 8th annual Dodgeball World Championships in Las Vegas in August 2011.

This year’s Speight’s Summit National Dodgeball Series will tour from Dunedin to Auckland stopping in four locations:

· Dunedin (12th March): Alhambra Union Rugby Club, Great King St

· Wellington (26th March): Chicago Bar, Queens Wharf

· Palmerston North (27th March): The Speight’s Ale House, Grey St

· Auckland (2nd April): Herne Bay Ponsonby Rackets Club

One outstanding dodgeball player will be selected from every tournament to join the Speight’s Black Keas on an all expense paid trip to the Dodgeball World Championships.

The first 2011 Speight’s Black Kea was selected at the Wellington Sevens on February 4th. Brook Gilmore from Whangarei displayed agility and exceptional skills on the court. This could be attributed to the fact that he’s recently represented Northland in Rugby 15’s and Sevens.

Shane Bloor from Speight’s says, “While Dodgeball is not considered a mainstream sport in New Zealand, the game’s popularity at the NZI Sevens has proven there is an appetite for the code amongst Kiwis. Last year’s Summit National Dodgeball Series produced an outstanding representative team. The 2010 Speight’s Black Keas did us proud at the Dodgeball World Champs and I’m sure this year’s team will do equally well.”

The Speight’s Summit National Dodgeball Series is about getting out on court and having fun. It’s also a great chance to sit in the stands and cheer on your mates. Teams are made up of four players and any one over 18 can get involved. Regional tournaments will be festival type occasions with up to 250 players participating. Registration is free and teams are encouraged to dress up.
