Great Kiwi Bake-Off a roaring success
Auckland CBD was subject to some sweetening on Monday, when a super-sized Great Kiwi Bake-Off invaded QEII Square with all kinds of home-baked goodies. The initiative was organized by a dedicated group of people to help raise funds for the Christchurch earthquake appeal.
12 tables and a trailer were piled with baking, with almost all of what was donated sold. Generous Aucklanders donated over $8,200 for the sweet treats, including one donation of $100 for a cupcake.
Organiser, Glenn Browne was happy at the great turnout and overwhelmed by how many Auckland organisations and ‘jafas’ got behind the project.
“The number of baked donations we had was hitting the thousands,” he says.
“This Bake-Off wasn’t just about fundraising, it was about bridging the gap between Aucklanders and Cantabrians. New Zealand is a small country, and we wanted to show that we all really care about each other.”
Cakes from around Auckland were delivered personally, or put on trains heading into the CBD.
“We’re just amazed at the response we received. Everyone was particularly generous, and we’re so pleased to be able to help out the Red Cross by adding some extra dollars for their earthquake appeal,” says Browne.
A $500 value wedding cake donated by Auckland Cake Art is currently being auctioned off on TradeMe for the cause, and the Great Kiwi Bake-Off is hoping that Auckland organisations may jump on board and match the total raised.
