The dumping of Darien Fenton’s Minimum Wage and Remuneration Amendment Bill will be met by widespread relief by business, says David Lowe, Employment Services Manager for EMA (Northern).

“Trying to set a minimum rate of pay for independent contractors would have fundamentally interfered with how business is done,” Mr Lowe said.

“We are also pleased proposals to overhaul the Bill at the Select Committee stage were put aside.

“Major surgery on bills by Select Committees has denied the public an opportunity to comment on new concepts being proposed and that has led to unintended consequences; the same sort of perverse outcomes would have been likely with this Bill.”
