Public interest high in central city re-development

Public interest in the Central City revitalisation is building, says Senior City Planner Maurice Roers.

Mr Roers is fielding calls and answering emails regarding the variety of new developments and amenities in the Central City.

"People, both residents and businesses, are really becoming excited by the changes that are taking place in the Central City," he says.

Mr Roers believes that the best is yet to come for the Central City. A lot of thought and effort on the part of Council has gone into the revitalisation programme and we are now starting to see the fruits of those labours, he says.

"We are enthusiastic about recent developments and even more so about the public and private initiatives yet to come. In the next few years, I think the whole of New Zealand will be impressed by the improvements to the streets and precincts of the Central City," he says of the residents' interest in the revitalisation programme.

In reply to one resident's query about the future of the Central City South, Mr Roers says the Council would seek to expand the lanes network, create additional open spaces, and preserve heritage buildings in one of the City's most iconic areas.

"It is our objective to facilitate open space that is active and edgy in future redevelopment in the Central City South area, " he says.
