Prime Minister John Key’s flippant dismissal of questions about the ministerial BMW with heated seats in Dunedin shows how arrogant he has become about the plight struggling Kiwi families find themselves in, says Labour’s Internal Affairs spokesperson Chris Hipkins.

“The reality is that John Key doesn’t give a damn about what hard-up Kiwis think,” Chris Hipkins said.

“As long as he and Finance Minister Bill English are comfortable driving round the deep south in winter, then that’s okay.

“On breakfast television this morning, when asked about the one-off BMW with luxury add-ons, John Key said he didn’t know what was in Dunedin,” Chris Hipkins said.

“Does he think Kiwis were born yesterday? He’s the Minister who signed off on the BMW purchase. He knows exactly what’s in Dunedin.

“To add insult to injury, John Key told the interviewer: ‘It’s beyond me, it’s not my car anyway’.

“Does this mean he will refuse to use this BMW when he travels to Dunedin,” Chris Hipkins said.

“You can be absolutely sure he won’t do that. No, he’ll sit in it with the self-satisfied smile we have all come to know so well.

“He’s the head of government. It’s his car.”
