Storm Damage at Fernery and Display Houses
High winds have forced the closure of house one in Pukekura Park’s Fernery and Display Houses.
Of the house’s estimated 750 small glass panes, 18 have been sucked out by the high winds, leaving broken glass among the ferns and in a staff-only area.
“We’ve had to close off house one for safety reasons, but the rest of the Fernery and Display Houses are still open to the public from Horton Walk at the back of the facility,” says Manager Parks Mark Bruhn.
House one is the oldest part of the facility, dating back to 1928, and is due for an upgrade in the coming 12 months.
The Council has been busy responding to reports of damaged trees throughout the district due to the high winds.
On the Huatoki Walkway, access is blocked at the prison quarry entrance by a fallen banksia. The public can get around this area by using the Redcoat Lane entrance until the banksia is removed.
“Right now we’re prioritising jobs according to health and safety issues,” says Mr Bruhn.
