With power still out to the coastal community of Waimarama, it is expected that telecommunication landline services may drop off by tomorrow (Thursday) morning.

Residents with cell phones are urged to turn them off to conserve battery power and only check their phones intermittently.

“We need Waimarama residents to conserve their cell phone power, in case they need it for an emergency situation” says Council spokesperson Paul Evans.

If people in Waimarama need urgent assistance overnight there will be Hastings District Council Rural Fire volunteers stationed in a Fire Engine next to the bridge at the entry to the township (adjacent to the Memorial Hall) throughout the night. These well skilled and trained volunteers can assist with any urgent matters.
