The Dunedin City Council is to provide alternative free parking during the New Zealand Land Transport upgrade of State Highway 88 now underway, and the associated creation of a cycleway.

A total of 44 on-street free car parks will be permanently removed from Anzac Avenue in the upgrade of State Highway 88 from St Andrew Street to Frederick Street. At the same time, 35 new on-street free parks will be created, further along Anzac Avenue between Frederick Street and the Leith Bridge.

Councillor Andrew Noone announced yesterday the DCC had decided to assist commuters during the upgrade and resulting temporary loss of car parks, by turning the St Andrew Street Pay-n-Display car park (behind Station Apartments) into free parking for the duration of the road upgrade. The car park currently costs $5 a day and there will be 85 new spaces available.

Cr Noone, who chairs the Infrastructure Services Committee, says the alternate free parking will be available from next Monday 2 May until the end of June this year while the changes to Anzac Avenue are being implemented.

“We hope this offer by the Council will allow a bit of time for commuters inconvenienced by the changes in the area to consider their options and adjust to the new layout for all-day parking” said Cr Noone.
