Former Mayor of Hastings, the late Jeremy Dwyer was recognised today, during the official opening of Landmarks Square.

The pocket park in Warren Street was developed as part of Hastings District Council’s commitment to develop quality green spaces in the city, following the sale of Nelson Park.

The park is to be known as Landmarks Square in recognition of the work of the Landmarks Trust, which is focused on creating civic pride and community identity through incorporating quality architecture, landscape, history and art in public places.

The Landmarks Trust was the brainchild of Jeremy Dwyer and the plaque, which is placed at the front of the Square, recognises his input into the beautification of Hastings.

The unveiling of the plaque was done by Mr Dwyer’s wife Marilyn Dwyer and Mayor Lawrence Yule who says “ the opening of the square marks a significant step forward with plans to make Hastings’ CBD an even better place to visit and shop”.

Landmarks Square incorporates a greened feature wall, an industrial steel pergola shade, paved, grassed and planted areas, lighting, public seating and a water fountain.

It’s the first small scale park to be built around Hastings, with Council already showing further commitment to green space, with the purchase of land opposite the Hastings RSA on the corner of Avenue Rd West and King St North.
