The Minister of Agriculture, the Right Honourable David Carter has indicated that, due to the legislative timetable being backed up because of the Canterbury earthquakes, the changes required to enable Trading Among Farmers look like they will not be taken up prior to the election.

Simon Couper, Chair of the Fonterra Shareholders’ Council, which represents the 10,000+ farmers in the co-operative supplying Fonterra milk says: “I spoke with a lot of farmers at a Fonterra conference yesterday and they were disappointed and frustrated that the legislative changes needed for Trading Among Farmers won’t be introduced before this year’s election. At the same time they are realistic about the situation and understand that Christchurch and Canterbury has to come first.”

“We are sure that the Government will make these changes as soon as they are able for the good of New Zealand as a whole. This change is critical to ensure Fonterra’s long-term viability and sustainability and we are sure the Government will consider the necessary changes as soon as they are able. ” said Mr Couper.
