Christchurch City Council has closed Sockburn Service Centre at 149 Main South Rd until further notice.

This is a cautious response following a recent increase in the New Zealand engineering design code requirements for the Christchurch area as a result of the 22 February earthquake.

Although the building has been green-stickered, the Council has decided to close the building in the interim.
Corporate Services General Manager Paul Anderson says it was decided to stop using the building to be absolutely sure there was no risk to staff or the public in future aftershocks.

“We realise this may be inconvenient for local people, but in this case it is better to be safe than sorry,” he says.

“We don’t yet know when the building will reopen and would encourage the public to use the nearby service centres at Riccarton (199 Clarence Street) and Fendalton (4 Jeffreys Rd).”

Staff working in the building have been relocated to other Council sites.
