Come into my Coffice
The sound of beans being ground, delicious food aromas and being surrounded by lots of people you don’t know; this is the new office environment for many Cantabrians.
Public relations and communications consultant, Ali Jones, says it’s known as the “coffice”, the coffee shop meets the office, and with many office spaces still out of action or operating out of smaller spaces, this is where people are meeting or working in Christchurch,” she says.
Jones says she considers carefully where to meet with clients after a space she was considering in the inner city became “unavailable” after the February quake.
“In the New Year I had been looking at new office space but it was in the CBD and is not an option now. I actually feel safer working from home as it hasn’t fallen down..... yet and it’s close to the children’s school in case we get another jolt,” she says. "I use coffices nearby for that reason too."
There are important things to consider when looking for a coffice and Jones has her favourites.
“Noisy spaces that echo are the worst but I have found outside at Brigitte’s in Merivale and Vanilla Bean on Lincoln Rd good spots.”
She says the best places are where you don’t have to queue for coffee, don’t have to shout and parking is good.
