As progress is made on rebuilding the road surface on Gover Street, a start date has been confirmed for work at another location.

Next Monday (16 May) a three-week project to resurface Hobson Street will begin.

“Last year we rebuilt the surface at Hobson Street’s intersection with Devon Street; this year we’re working on the section between Devon and Molesworth,” says Manager Roading Assets Max Aves.

As with Gover and Devon streets, this work will be done from 7pm-6am from Sunday to Thursday nights to lessen the disruption to traffic. The road will be closed to all traffic during these times, and a detour put in place.

The work on Hobson Street is part of a four-year programme to improve all of Devon Street in the CBD and many of the main connecting roads. The top layers of seal will be removed and a new pavement laid with a hotmix surface.

Meanwhile, wet weather has delayed the resurfacing of part of Gover Street.

“We had planned to dig up and reseal each block of Gover before moving on to the next one, but we’re dependent on dry weather for the cement-stabilisation of the pavement and the hotmix surfacing,” says Mr Aves.

“Instead of waiting for fine weather to resurface the Devon to Gill section of Gover, we’ve gone ahead and started work on the Gill to Molesworth section and will then resurface all of the blocks in one go when the weather gives us a break.”
