The Wanaka Community Board will be updated on progress of the Wanaka Sports Facility next Tuesday, Queenstown Lakes District Council general manager community service Paul Wilson said.

In March this year the Council passed a resolution that land straddling Three Parks and North Three Parks was the preferred location for the facility.

“We are now at a point of signing draft agreements with the landowner and close to having a more definitive conversation with users and the community about the facility mix,” Mr Wilson said.

The Council had appointed capital works manager Ken Gousmett as project manager and enlisted a team to provide the necessary skills and resources to deliver the facility.

Mr Gousmett project managed construction of the Queenstown Aquatic Centre, the Wanaka Library and the Lake Wanaka Centre.

Council hoped to get the consultation underway shortly.

“We intend to have two sessions with the community, the first will gather views based on a general design concept, the second will get feedback on a draft concept design and draft facility mix,” Mr Wilson said.

The Council planned to set up a survey online to offer an additional way that people could have further input on the facility.

“We are also proposing to establish a steering group, which will include membership from the Wanaka Community Board and Councillors,” Mr Wilson said.

The facility is planned to initially include two indoor courts, ancillary rooms and outdoor playing fields.
