ISAF World Cup, Netherlands – Kiwi 49er crew up to 3rd

Racing continued overnight in blustery, wet conditions in Medemblik, the Netherlands on day four at the ISAF Sailing World Cup Regatta.

In the 49er Peter Burling and Blair Tuke returned to the water after a cancelled day to score 4, 2, 1 in three races sailed overnight. This sees them climb into third position from fourth with two days of competition remaining.

GBR’s Morrison and Rhodes have maintained consistency continuing to lead the fleet eight points ahead of two-time world champ in the class Outteridge and Jensen from Australia. The kiwis have a nine point gap to close to catch the Aussies.

In the Men’s RS:X fleet kiwi, Jon-Paul Tobin and Dorian van Rijsselberge (NED) have departed the regatta to prepare for Skandia Sail for Gold, Weymouth, leaving a hole at the top of the board clearing the way for Taehoon Lee (KOR).

“As hard as it is to not complete the regatta the overall plan coming into this event was to race the first three days prior to clocking out with the primary aim to bring full power to Sail for Gold, Weymouth, United Kingdom in ten days time,” explains Tobin who can be encouraged with his form over the past three days.

In the Finn Dan Slater returned a 9th and a race win on day four, and now lies 15th overall still required to carry one of two black flags the opening days of the regatta.

Women’s Match Racers Stephanie Hazard, Jenna Hansen and Susannah Pyatt were up against four other teams lying equal to secure a spot in the gold fleet.

“Today we got on the wrong side of a five way tie for a place in the gold fleet, and went on to sail the repecharge,” reports the team. “From there we didn't go so well and only managed one win in the repecharge to place 12th overall.”

Racing continues tonight with two more days of competition.
