Indoor Community Sports Centre
The Wellington Indoor Community Sports Centre in Kilbirnie is a step nearer completion with the installation of the all-important sprung timber floor.
The centre's manager, Craig Hutchings, says the state-of-the-art solid hardwood floor is expected to be complete by the end of the month - no mean feat given its size.
"At 9130sq m, it's the biggest floor of its kind in New Zealand - and putting it all together is a bit like a giant jigsaw puzzle."
The first step in the process is to drill holes for all the goal posts and hoops - 86 in total. Waterproof sheeting is then put over the concrete floor.
The wooden battens, which are laid down next, have rubber pads underneath - a bit like little feet - to give the floor that springy feeling. The timber floorboards, which come all the way from Denmark, are supplied by Junkers - a world leader in the supply of hardwood sports floors.
Painting the court markings and applying protective coatings are the final steps in the process.
Craig says the final product will provide a safe and enjoyable sports experience for the diverse range of groups who will use the facility.
"Whether you're a beginner or an elite athlete, this floor guarantees you a high degree of comfort, safety and performance."
