Work is underway to repair 124km of water mains damaged in the September and February earthquakes.

A map released today by the Christchurch City Council shows residents the extent of the damage and the locations of water mains that need to be replaced. Ten kilometres of pipe damaged in the September earthquake has already been replaced, and work is underway right now on 12km of the pipe damaged in the February earthquake.

This is the third in a series of maps being released by the Council to help explain to residents some of the city issues and repair works underway as a result of the earthquakes. It, and other earthquake damage maps, are available online at www.ccc.govt.nz/earthquake under the Water Services and Wasterwater sections.

Council Water and Waste Manager Mark Christison says that while water supply has been restored to the whole city, apart from some sections of the red zone, there is still work to do to repair damages.

"We want to ensure people have as much information as possible about the work that is underway so that they know what is going on in their neighbourhoods."

Mr Christison says this map and others on the website will be updated regularly to keep residents informed on repair work progress.

Water supplies have been chlorinated to a level agreed with the Medical Officer of Health and is in line with best practice used in city's with chlorinated water. The tap water in the city and on Banks Peninsula is constantly tested to the New Zealand Drinking Water Standards and is safe to drink.
