REGULAR police presence was responsible for improved traffic behaviour at Himatangi Beach during the summer, and a drop-off in graffiti and vandalism around the village, says beach ranger Elaine Pinker.

“In the five years I’ve been beach ranger this would be the best behaved summer ever, but, and it is a very big but, only because of police presence. No police - and the crazy, inconsiderate driving can be overwhelming.”

She said the appearance of the police vehicle also acted as a deterrent in preventing motorbike and vehicle racing in the area, as well as the removal of signs and breaking of bottles.

“There is now a much greater appreciation and acceptance by locals, with more information and detailed descriptions being passed on. Probably most of the lawbreaking now is by visitors to the village and beach.”

Ms Pinker said the most prevalent traffic offences involved speeding, loss of traction (donuts) and drifting, with many such incidents carried out close to pedestrians.

“Showing off to the crowd, obviously, is more pleasurable than driving up or down the beach out of sight to perform their antics.”

It was also interesting to note that many people pulled up for reckless driving had no warrant of fitness or registration for their vehicles and were unlicensed or forbidden drivers.

Ms Pinker said there had been a noticeable interest in overseas tourists keen to hear about the coastline and beaches and she had answered many queries regarding tides, safe swimming areas, fishing, camping and distances to other centres.
