WELLINGTON CITY

Two competitions were held as part of IntensCITY Week (a celebration of Wellington urban design), a schools art competition and an ideas competition for the route from the city to the airport, via the Basin Reserve.

The winner of the Wellington 2040 – Just Imagine… schools art competition, which challenged students to look critically at the future physical shape of Wellington, was Lydia Whiting, 12, from Thorndon School. For her work ‘Makara Beach', Lydia wins a half day at Weta Workshop, plus $500 credit to spend on Scholastic products via the Lucky Book Club, and a $500 art and craft supplies voucher for her school.

The judges (Mayor Kerry Prendergast, architect Ian Athfield and art critic Mark Amery) said of her work: "This was a very strong entry that not only played with interesting ideas about the future of the physical environment of Makara Beach, but was very well executed as a piece of art."

There were two runners-up: Margaret Hydes, 11, from Northland School (for Year 7) and Deanna Walker, 12, from Clyde Quay School (for Year 8). The judges gave a Special Mention award to Luke Kibblewhite, 11, from Northland School.

The winner of the aBc – Connection through to the City ideas competition was Jesse Matthews and Matt Lee. They win a $5000 cash prize.

The judges (Wellington City Council Director of Transport and Urban Development, Ernst Zollner; Victoria University Head of the Landscape Architecture programme. Penny Allan; Auckland City Council Manager Urban Design, Ludo Campbell-Reid; and NZ Bus Business Development Manager, Garth Stewart), said of their work: "This offers an original and visionary plan for Wellington over a 30 year timeframe, which uses an investment in high frequency public transport to direct urban growth.

"It placed a strong emphasis on public space, and broadening the structure and density of the CBD to Te Aro and other important town centres."

The judges awarded three runners-up awards of $1000 each to: Simon Hardy; the team of Nic Ballara, Mark Southcombe and Richard Ainsworth; and the team of Ben Jagersma and Anna Wallace.

The winners of both competitions will be publicly announced tonight by Hon. Marian Hobbs, MP for Wellington Central, at the launch of the IntensCITY Week Exhibition (which displays both competitions' entries) in the foyer of the State Insurance Building, 1 Willis Street, from 5.15pm.
