If the Employers and Manufacturers Association (EMA) really did support pay equity, it would support Catherine Delahunty’s members bill, said the Green Party today.

Alasdair Thompson, head of Employers and Manufacturers Association issued an apology this afternoon for his comments yesterday, and stated that there was no justification for gender to influence what someone was paid.

Green Party Co-leader Russel Norman said that Mr Thompson’s apology was meaningless without action.

“He can put his money where his mouth is by supporting the Bill, which will make gendered pay rates more transparent.

“This will empower women to negotiate higher wages when they are more productive.

“Mr Thompson’s claim that the Bill would be ‘a bureaucratic nightmare’ for employers is ridiculous and unsubstantiated.

“On Thursday night’s Campbell Live interview, he acknowledged that employers are already required to keep detailed records.

“How much more time and paperwork would it take to record gender?

“The Green Party invites the EMA to demonstrate that they support equal pay for equal work by supporting this Bill,” said Dr Norman.
