Roadside grate thefts soar in Hamilton
Thieves are continuing to target roadside catch pit grates in Hamilton, with 22 having been stolen across the city during the past week.
The thefts pose serious safety risks to the public and residents are urged to report any suspicious activity around catch pit grates to Hamilton City Council or the police.
Catch pit grates cover holes that drain the water off the road and into storm water drains. They are designed to let the water flow through, while at the same time stopping a car tyre or person from falling into the drain.
While in the past the thefts have mainly occurred at night, it is understood some thieves are now posing as workmen and stealing the grates in the daytime.
Hamilton City Council Transportation Manager Phil Consedine said only authorised personnel with clearly marked Hamilton City Council or contractor vehicles should be working around catch pit grates, and if residents suspect suspicious behaviour they should contact Council on 838 6699.
“Due to a spate of thefts across the country, replacement grates are now in short supply and temporary covers or protection will be used over any exposed catch pits until replacement lids can be obtained,” he said.
“We advise the public to take care and avoid walking, riding or driving over catch pits to reduce accident risk. Our number one concern is for the safety of the public.”
In total 317 cast iron grates have been stolen in Hamilton this year, with the cost of replacing the 50-60kg grates coming in at just under $100,000
