Cyclists and walkers in Napier are to have even more options and will be able to range further with improved links on Napier’s Rotary Pathway network.

Work has begun on forming a pathway for one of the city’s most scenic coastal stretches, along The Esplanade from between James Street and the existing pathway north of Westshore. This project should be completed by spring.

In early July, a start will be made on widening the existing footpath on the seaward side of Westshore Bridge. As part of the work, safety railing will be constructed to separate vehicle traffic from pedestrians and cyclists.

At the same time, work will begin on constructing a pathway along the western side of Prebensen Drive between Taipo Stream and the existing pedestrian crossing at Cato Road.

Plans are also being developed for a pathway from Customs Quay through the Napier Sailing Club grounds to Meeanee Quay.

These latest projects are all further steps towards achieving a network of cycling and walking paths aimed at encompassing the city.
