CHRISTCHURCH

Christchurch’s Sister Cities rallied behind Christchurch after the 22 February earthquake, and their support continues.

As soon as the earthquake occurred, Kurashiki in Japan, our Sister City since 1973, immediately dispatched a three member rescue team and sent dust masks, water canisters and tarpaulins. The citizens then raised just under $300,000 through public donations and a donation from Kurashiki City.

Adelaide, a Sister City since 1972, enabled 127 University of Canterbury students to study at the University of Adelaide so their studies would not be disrupted.

Seattle (USA) raised more than $51,000 and fundraising efforts there continue.

Korean Sister City Songpa-Gu contributed $35,000 to the Mayoral Relief Fund, on top of their $23,000 donation following the September 2010 earthquake.

Wuhan, in China, sent $19,700 to the Mayoral Relief Fund. Guilin in China, Hastings’ Sister City, sent $5000.

The financial contributions alone now total just over $400,000, along with extensive in-kind donations.

Christchurch Mayor Bob Parker says the support was vital, swift, and valuable. “When tragedy struck our city in February, we knew immediately that we were not alone.

“The immediate response and quick willingness to assist a Sister City in need demonstrates the importance of our Sister City framework. This generosity demonstrates how Sister Cities can come to one another’s aid during difficult times.”

“Christchurch's Sister Cities are long standing relationships, and the generosity they have shown during this time of need highlights the importance of international friendships.”
