Today’s announcement of the State Highway 20 Waterview decision marks a welcome end to 10 years of uncertainty for communities and their open space, the Albert-Eden Local Board says.

The Board of Inquiry has approved the resource consents and notices of requirement to complete the Western Ring Route under the new ‘fast track’ process.

Margi Watson, Deputy Chair of the Albert-Eden Local Board, says her board had opposed the construction of the motorway because of hugely negative impacts on the local area.

The local board has worked solidly, since its creation in November 2011, to represent the best interests of the community.

“We have worked alongside local community and environmental groups to ensure that the mitigation was sound and appropriate. Today is all about big wins for small communities. Our communities never gave up the fight to protect their environment, heritage, and people. The local board has ensured that communities were given a voice,” Ms Watson says.

Significant works to offset the impacts of the motorway include BMX tracks, skate parks, playgrounds, sports fields, cycleways and parks. Substantial environmental work is included. Heritage features will be protected. The central Auckland suburbs of Pt Chevalier, Waterview, Mt Albert and Owairaka will all benefit from the wins.

“This is how a motorway should be built. Motorways are for vehicles – and the communities and open space they go through should not be forgotten,” says Ms Watson.

“The Board of Inquiry, led by Judge Laurie Newhook, has done its duty ably. They have delivered a decision that shows communities are both reasonable and knowledgeable and should be listened to.”
