Mayor Alistair Sowman was amongst those cheering on the latest group of Marlborough teens to graduate from the CACTUS programme - Combined Adolescent Challenge Training Unit Support.

Their final challenge – pulling a fire engine through the streets of Blenheim – was followed by the presentation of graduation certificates.

Supported by the Police, the CACTUS fitness and discipline programme has been running in Marlborough since 2007.

Mr Sowman says the youngsters learn self-discipline, social skills and self-confidence.

“The programme pushes kids to their limits. They learn to eat breakfast, go to bed earlier and sleep more soundly because they have built up their physical fitness. In some cases, it provides a channel for energy that could equally be put to destructive use,” he says.

“Teenagers get such bad press, not always deserved, so it’s great to hear about a success story.”
