Christchurch artists to exhibit work at Hamiltons ArtsPost

The work of seven Christchurch artists will go on display at Hamilton’s ArtsPost Galleries and Shop this month, after the group accepted an invitation to exhibit their art outside of their quake-damaged city.

The artists, Linda Pringle, Rebecca Stewart, Amanda Beddis, Kim Hennessy, Mark Soltero, Ina Johann and Dr. Victoria Edwards, will display their work as part of the exhibition ‘A Chain of Episodes’. Amongst the artworks will be collage, painting, sculpture, ceramics and photography – providing viewers with a wide variety of styles and influencing themes.

Waikato Museum Director Kate Vusoniwailala said the exhibition came about after space became available in two of ArtsPost’s galleries, allowing the facility to extend an invitation to the Christchurch artists.

“Following the February quake, the opportunity for Christchurch artists to exhibit work in their own city decreased due to lack of gallery space – this was seen as a way for ArtsPost to offer its support to Christchurch artists by providing a space in which they can continue to showcase their art while their city rebuilds,” she said.

“Because ArtsPost’s core focus is Waikato art, this is also a unique opportunity for the public to experience the works of Christchurch contemporary artists right here in Hamilton.”

Ms Vusoniwailala said the fact that A Chain of Episodes will exhibit alongside the exhibition ‘Where’ featuring the works of three Hamilton artists may act as extra inspiration for the Christchurch group.

“It will definitely be motivating for the South Island artists to exhibit alongside their North Island counterparts – this promises to be a true collaboration of the nation’s artistic talent on show,” she said.

A Chain of Episodes opens on 21 July at 5.30pm and will remain on display until 15 August.

North Canterbury vineyard Sherwood Estate, which has been an active supporter of the arts in Christchurch for a number of years through their association with COCA and The Arthouse galleries, is sponsoring the opening night, alongside Hamilton cafes Hazel Hayes and the Coffee and Food Establishment.
